Health Testing of Floden Farm Golden Retrivers Foundation and Parent Dogs
We test for the following OFA certifications and DNA testing for producing healthy puppies, and here's why -
OFA Hips - Our dogs are x-ray evaluated at 24 months of age or older. Only Excellent, Good, and Fair are passing ratings. Goldens are ranked #41 out of 177 higher risk breeds for hip dysplasia. 20.1% of the golden retriever population is dysplastic.... (read more) Having 3 generations or more of tested parents greatly reduces the risk of hip dysplasia. The surgical repair for dysplasia is over $4,000 per hip and takes a 1-2 month recovery period.
OFA Elbows - Our dogs are x-ray evaluated at 24 months of age or more for Normal elbows. OFA is the only organization currently offering elbow evaluation int eh US. Golden retrievers are ranked #31 out of 117 higher risk breeds for elbow dysplasia. 11.1% of goldens elbows are dysplastic. Having 3 generations or more of Normal elbows greatly reduces the chances of offspring being dysplastic. The surgical repair for dysplasia is $1500-4000 per elbow.
OFA Heart - Our dogs are evaluated by a veterinary Cardiologist (auscultation or echo) at 12 months of age or older. Practitioner and specialist certifications are NOT recommended (cardiologist only). Goldens are ranked #54 out of 140 higher risk breeds for heart problems. Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis (SAS) is prevalent in golden retrievers - having a cardiologist certification helps reduce this risk. SAS can affect seemingly health dogs and sudden death of young dogs may occur.
OFA Eyes - Normal or Normal with Breeder Option Codes are accepted for pups of any age, and breeding dogs should be certified within 12 months of breeding and annually throughout their life.Blinding disorders exist within the golden retriver breed, and pigmentary uveitis may present at any stage of life.
DNA Testing - We test for a number of known golden retriever hereditary disorders, such as those that can cause blindess, seizures, and skin conditions. Understanding which dogs have clear, carrier or affect status allows us to make good breeding decisions and therefore we are able to avoid producing affected dogs. Carrier and even affected dogs can be used responsibly in breeding if breeding to a Clear status dog.
